The ideas behind the Bok Bot?

LOCAL FOOD PRODUCTION, WASTE DIVERSION, PEST CONTROL

LOCAL FOOD

Food is energy for our bodies, producing this locally reduces energy usage in many other areas as well (i.e. by reducing dependency on the store, distributor, and farmers, you also cut out the transportation between each node, the food is made and consumed locally eliminating the entire supply chain).

WASTE DIVERSION

A vast majority of the food we produce is wasted and not consumed. Landfill diversion is a major issue and something that can be solved with backyard chickens. Almost all food waste can be converted to a food source for chickens instead of being thrown out as waste.

PEST CONTROL

The economic burden associated with purchasing poisons to control insects and pests can be largely erradicated. The reduction in chemicals results in safer living areas for all living things. Chickens do a great job of keeping property bug free. Their waste is subsequently a fertilizer instead of a toxic chemical.

TECHNICAL LEARNING

With the BokBot, we are passionate about sharing the skills necessary to bring an automated chicken coop on-line and successfully keep backyard chickens. We incorporate best practices for chicken keeping, electontrics, and expose the basics of open source software development with the focus on web technologies. We provide example implementations where possible to show real world implementations.

What makes the BokBot POWERFUL?

For those with prior technical experience this will make more sense. If you're just starting out don't worry we will explain the missing details!
We start with static html, move as fast as possible to get things started, then move to static html generated by templates, and then add on javascript plus microservice backends for dynamicism. This achieves near zero latency and allows user to view their coop data real time,
The sensor data is retained locally or on a cloud instance, The interfaces are extendable to allow additional features and integrations. We are focusing on the smart features and an easy to use UI that people have come to expect across all platforms. This means everything should start browser first, react to viewport size, then you only have to cater to the indivual tweaks or port the app into your other platforms using one of the great open source frameworks that allow you to port html5 + javascript to the various mobile platforms as 'native apps'.

BokBot Functions

THE PRIMARY BOKBOT TASKS AND GOALS

Automatic Lights

Lighting control is one of the more frequent needs. The BokBot can control lights via motion sensors, a time schedule, in response to ambient lighting conditions or remotely on demand.

EXTERNAL VIEWING

With the proper gear in the coop, both still images and video can be stored or streamed based on user needs

AUDIO MONITORING

How many distinct sounds does a chicken make? What time did a predator stir up the flock? With audio recording both can be determined. Lights can be turned on with commotion. Can we use audio to count the number of eggs layed?

BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE

BokBot interfaces use open standards and frameworks. While they may be available at some point the initial interfaces are not Android / iOS specific and will function on any device with a web browser and internet access.

OPEN SOURCE HARDWARE

We promote the use of open source hardware that anyone can acquire cheaply and utilize. This also allows for convenient replacement of parts when common devices like Arduino or Raspberry Pi's are utilized.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND ALERTS

Can your coop send a Tweet via Twitter? Send an e-mail or text message to notify you of a threat (no water, poor air quality, etc)? With a few custizations anything is possible. Where internet isn't available text alerts can be configured instead (requires appropriate service for area).
